I can't believe the first full week of school is nearly in the "books."  I've definitely noticed the increase in traffic and as I visit in the community, I notice the parent's focus on their child's school day and homework.  I've also noticed the transition in their questions trying to better understand the new policies implemented this year and the school system's new strategic plan (IGNITE 2030) and how it impacts their kids.

One of the most important responsibilities of a School Board member is not making decisions behind closed doors, it is listening. A strong public school system is built on trust, transparency, and open lines of communication between families, educators, and the community.

As I talk with parents, teachers, and students throughout Frederick County, I hear a common theme: people want their voices to matter. They want to know that when they share concerns or ideas, someone on the School Board is truly listening, not just waiting for their turn to respond. That kind of listening takes patience, humility, and a genuine desire to understand the experiences of others. I know that I possess those characteristics and promise to bring that kind of leadership.

Equally important is clear, respectful communication. Parents deserve to know what decisions are being made and why. Teachers deserve honest feedback and consistent support. Taxpayers deserve transparency regarding how resources are being used. When communication breaks down, frustration and mistrust quickly follow. But when communication is open, consistent, and collaborative, our schools thrive!

If elected, I am committed to:

  • Holding regular opportunities for parents, teachers, and community members to share their perspectives.
  • Explaining decisions clearly, so stakeholders understand not just the “what,” but the “why.”
  • Maintaining a respectful dialogue, even when disagreements arise, because our focus must remain on what is best for students.

Good governance begins with good communication. By listening first and speaking with clarity and honesty, we can strengthen the partnership between the School Board, families, teachers, and our broader community. At the end of the day, our children benefit most when we work together and working together starts with listening.
