As a parent and community member, nothing matters more to me than knowing our children are safe when they walk through the school doors each morning. That’s why I was encouraged by the installation of weapons detection systems throughout the Frederick County Public Schools, including our elementary campuses.

Last week, systems went live at nine more schools, from Gainesboro and Stonewall to Armel, Greenwood Mill, Orchard View, Redbud Run, Indian Hollow, Middletown, and Frederick County Middle. With this rollout, every student and staff member in Frederick County will benefit from an added layer of protection.

This initiative began after a deeply concerning incident last year, when a 9-year-old student at Jordan Springs Elementary was found with a loaded handgun in his backpack. Thankfully, no one was hurt but it was a stark reminder that safety must never be taken for granted.  We only get one chance at school safety and ensuring something more tragic doesn’t take place.

I’m grateful to see how our school leaders and the Frederick County Board of Supervisors acted to make sure something like that never happens again. In June, the BoS approved an additional $850,000+ in funding to expand the detector systems division-wide. That’s the kind of responsible action we need when it comes to protecting our children.

Of course, safety isn’t just about technology. It’s about creating a culture of awareness, trust, and open communication. It’s about students feeling comfortable reporting concerns, parents feeling confident in our schools, and teachers knowing they have the support they need to keep classrooms safe and focused on learning.

As a candidate for the Frederick County School Board- Shawnee District, I will always put student safety first. I support practical, commonsense measures like these steps that protect our children without disrupting their learning or our school communities.

Every student deserves to learn in a safe, welcoming environment. Every parent deserves peace of mind. I’m proud of the progress we’re making, and I’m committed to continuing the work to ensure that Frederick County remains a place where safety, learning, and community go hand in hand.

Get out and vote!!  I promise to continue to share my thoughts, earn your trust and hopefully earn your vote as well.
